Research interests: Intercultural Communication, Discourse Analysis, Language Planning Policy, English language teaching methodology.
Mark Holst teaches English language education and sociolinguistics. He has pursued two main areas of research: discourse and identity as it relates to intercultural communication, and EFL teaching methodology in the Japanese education system. His doctoral research was an analysis of power asymmetry and the discourse of Japanese doctor-patient consultations, examining the influence of Japanese norms of interpersonal communication in this specific institutional setting. He studies EFL teaching methodology in secondary and tertiary education in Japan and Laos, and has investigated language learning, language use and linguistic identity in Malaysian schools and universities.

Research interests: Task-based Language Teaching (TBLT) and I have attended all the biennial TBLT conferences since the first in Leuven, Belgium in 2005. My endeavor is to examine the influence increased motivation has upon the output of accuracy, complexity, and fluency using the TBLT task.
I have also been active in conducting tele-collaboration sessions with our sister university, Otago University. It is my hope to study the use of language learning strategies used during the telecollaboration session in the near future.
